Long Acting Reversible Contraception
It includes implants, coils and injections.
What is Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)?
It includes implants, coils and injections. They are called
Long acting: because they provide reliable contraception for between 3 years (for implants) to 5-10 years (for coils) without having to remember to take a pill every day.
Reversible: because your fertility returns to normal quickly when you have it removed, usually within a week.
It is a good option for women who don’t want to get pregnant soon. Some types can also be used to help with:
- heavy periods
- hormone replacement therapy for menopause symptoms.
This service is provided for TLCP registered patients only.
There are many types of contraception available.
The Contraception Choices website provides honest information to help weigh up the pros and cons

Preparing for your Implant or Coil appointment
Before your appointment, you may wish to take paracetamol or ibuprofen if you are able to. This can help with any discomfort during and following the procedure.
Do not have unprotected sex in the 3 weeks before your appointment, or you may not be able to have your chosen LARC method. Please make sure you are using a reliable method of contraception during this time or abstain from sex.
If you are having your coil changed, please use condoms or abstain from sex for 1 week before your appointment. This is because if there are difficulties inserting a new coil during the appointment there is a risk you could become pregnant
Please read the leaflet sent to you after booking your appointment so you know what to expect.
